Solutions in Voltage Regulation for Healthcare

Posted September 11, 2024 by Conor Duffy

Real-world examples of how Advanced Energy’s power conversion solutions improve medical equipment performance.

Advanced Energy (AE) understands the need for medical precision and the non-negotiable need for equipment that performs flawlessly under stringent healthcare standards. For nearly 40 years, AE has met the high standards and precision required for patient care by providing accurate and regulated voltage outputs for medical and life science applications (see the Critical Role in Voltage Regulation in Patient Care blog).

This blog shows two real-life examples of how Advanced Energy’s transformative power solutions make a difference in performance and accurate voltage output.

Aesthetic Laser Equipment Powered by CoolX1800

Challenge: A leader in aesthetic laser equipment wanted to develop new devices for target skin conditions and cosmetic procedures. The powering requirement was clear: create a compact design with sophisticated control and regulated power outputs for precise laser treatments.

Solution: The solution was CoolX®1800, Advanced Energy’s smart, modular power supply technology. With medical safety standard certifications and a modular framework that supports optimized, high-density power delivery, the CoolX1800 offered the design flexibility needed to create a suite of isolated and regulated DC voltages. The integrated PMBus digital intelligence capabilities made it easy to integrate with the equipment’s control and monitoring electronics, enabling precise modulation of laser pulses.

Outcome: The CoolX1800 was chosen for its unmatched power density, delivering up to 1,800 W in a 1U package - ideal for the portability of an aesthetic laser system. The CoolX1800 platform avoided the need for a custom design, allowed modules to connect in parallel for higher current requirements and offered digital control functionality. The CoolX1800 provided a seamless solution that met the system needs in the shortest time.

Advancing Cardiac Care with Pulsed Field Ablation

Challenge: A major medical device manufacturer wanted to innovate the treatment of atrial fibrillation. They wanted to develop a pulsed field ablation system that required a precise and reliable power architecture. The power architecture had to provide the regulated voltage to target cardiac tissue selectively without affecting the surrounding areas. The design needed a single-output AC-DC power supply and a high-voltage DC-DC converter.

Solution: AE offered the SL Power™ NGB660 family for AC-DC power needs and the UltraVolt® High Power C series for high-voltage DC-DC conversion. Compact yet powerful, the NGB660 family was also selected for its superior performance in EMI and EMC, important for simplified compliance with key medical standards. The UltraVolt High Power C series delivered the high voltages for capacitor charging while supporting the precision required for pulsed electric fields (PEF) delivery.

Outcome: The collaboration with AE resulted in a controllable power supply architecture that handled the high voltages and the precision voltage regulation for advanced cardiac treatment. AE’s technical support and global Customer Experience Centers (CECs) helped the customer with design and testing needs, speeding up the transition from concept to product.

Conclusion

These case studies are just two examples of how Advanced Energy, with the industry’s widest range of medical power supplies, helps medical equipment manufacturers develop ever-more sophisticated equipment in ever-smaller form factors with the shortest time-to-market.

Our open frame, fanless and configurable models, DC-DC modules and medical AC adapters are all engineered to the demanding requirements of medical equipment that must function reliably over many years with minimum possible downtime. In addition, AE’s unrivalled engineering support and global Customer Experience Centers (CECs) address customer design and testing needs all over the world.
